Do You Read the Magazine Focused on E-Learning?

In the year 2010, many print magazines now sport online, audio, or e-reader versions (in part or whole). The Learning and Development field is blessed with many great magazines, with North America alone providing such common favorites as Training Magazine, Chief Learning Officer magazine, ASTD's T+D magazine, as well as others that include coverage of L&D topics in a broader context, such as Talent Management magazine.

While individual blogs can at times provide equally compelling content, there is also an interesting middle-category: the purely online magazine. And in the L&D industry perhaps none is as strong as Learning Solutions Magazine, from the eLearning Guild. Since 2002, the eLearning Guild had been publishing Learning Solutions Magazine, as an e-document distributed in PDF format. That changed in November of last year, when the Guild re-launched the magazine in a new web-based format. As a publication of the eLearning Guild, naturally the magazine focuses on one area of the L&D industry: e-Learning programs. They describe the magazine as:

"the e-Learning industry’s oldest and most trusted source for practical information on the strategies, tools, technologies, services, and best practices for the management, design, development, and implementation of enterprise-wide e-Learning programs. Learning Solutions Magazine offers feature articles, case studies, reviews, interviews, spotlights, columns, snippets, tips, and news that you can use with confidence while making critical decisions to ensure your organization’s success with e-Learning."

As for who might have an interest in the magazine, they state their audience as being "anyone involved in the management, design, development, and implementation of e-Learning in support of enterprise-wide training efforts. Whether you and your organization are new to e-Learning, or you've been skating on the bleeding edge for some time, Learning Solutions Magazine offers timely information you'll need to succeed." Magazine articles are accessible by Guild members (including the free Associate level of membership) at their website, and articles older than 90 days are accessible by anyone.

Throughout the transition, Publisher David Holcombe and Managing Editor Bill Brandon have continued to create content on par with the best industry resources, including very timely articles on the latest e-Learning tools and techniques, and recurring columns from several leaders in the field. For example, a great new columnist who joined earlier this year is Dr. Jane Bozarth, a popular conference speaker and author of several books in the L&D industry. Her new column is named "Nuts and Bolts," and her topic selections and down-to-earth, sometimes provocative writing style make it a regular must-read for anyone interested in e-Learning. Her first three columns give you good reason to look forward to more:

And in conjunction with their recent mLearnCon conference, the magazine has published a series of solid articles on the increasingly hot topic of Mobile Learning. Just another way that the eLearning Guild and Learning Solutions Magazine are helping you stay abreast of the latest trends and key topics in your field!

2015: Looking Five Years Ahead

What will learning technology look like in 2015? That was the question that ASTD's Learning Circuit's blog asked as the May "Big Question" of the month. If you aren't familiar with this blog series, it is an interesting approach: blog-host and industry expert Tony Karrer sets some context and then asks a provocative question. Various other industry bloggers respond by writing their own postings and these are linked from the ASTD Learning Circuit's blog. It can be a great way to get a conversation going -- and one you might consider using with blogs internally at your own organization.

As for May's "Big Question," over a dozen industry experts chimed in with their ideas and predictions. Naturally the responses ranged quite a bit, but some common themes can be seen:

  • Web 2.0 technology-enabled social learning is commonplace, no longer "new," and far more integrated into your workflow.
  • There is more informal learning -- social learning and otherwise -- incorporated into training/learning programs.
  • There is much improved access to learning, especially with more learning available on a broad range of mobile devices, and less e-Learning tied to the PC.
  • Learners demand -- and are often given -- far more control of their learning experience: the tools, the content, etc. With things like ratings and comments, learners will also have a more powerful voice about what learning content and experiences are working and what is failing to meet their needs.
  • A significant increase in focus on performance support, including the use of mobile devices for performance support.
  • Improved and new standards, such as HTML5 (though several note that it likely won't have supplanted Flash for rich animation and interactivity in e-Learning), and perhaps even standards for immersive virtual world implementations.
  • Classroom training will still exist, but most often only as part of blended programs, with shorter face-to-face workshops being popular for some subject areas.

Interestingly, the views of what the fate of e-Learning will be in five years varies a bit -- depending on what you mean by "e-Learning" and what your current context is. Will the use of e-Learning, however defined, increase or decrease? Some of those who are currently focused on classroom training see great potential for shifts to more "e-Learning" -- either self-paced modules or synchronous virtual classroom e-Learning -- for a variety of reasons, including ongoing cost pressures, globalization/geography/travel aspects, and continuously improving technology. But others see Web 2.0-enabled social learning, and an increased attention to informal learning in organizations more broadly, and perhaps also more delivery of performance support content to mobile devices, as at least partially usurping traditional formal e-Learning courses. And related to this, some see a shift in e-Learning authoring tools from desktop applications to more online-based authoring approaches (with perhaps some being open source).

So what do you foresee for the use of learning technology at your organization in the coming years? What would you predict will be changes between now and 2015? Do you have a three- or five-year plan or vision? And how are you positioning your learning programs to take advantage of the opportunities that technology improvements will provide to you? Contact your Element K Account Executive or Learning Consultant to discuss your learning solution needs and the value that Element K's products and services can provide in getting you closer to your 2015 vision.

Social Learning: Hot Conference Topic and an Upcoming Must-Read Book

As noted in a recent posting at Element K Blog, Reflections on ASTD ICE 2010, the topic of social learning was a prominent one at ASTD's biggest annual event, held in May this year in Chicago. In fact, along with leadership development and learning evaluation and measurement, social learning was pretty clearly a top-three subject area. From ASTD President Tony Bingham's tone-setting keynote, to Groundswell and Open Leadership author Charlene Li's keynote session, to numerous other concurrent sessions -- social learning continues to be arguably the hottest topic in the field.

In June 2010 issue of ASTD's newsletter LX Briefing, Bingham and social learning expert Marcia Conner were interviewed ("Transforming the Learning Organization") on the use of social media technologies in organizations. In particular, the interview focuses on a much-anticipated new book (summer release) from Bingham and Conner, titled The New Social Learning: A Guide to Transforming Organizations Through Social Media.

For those who face significant challenges in implementing social learning in their organizations, Bingham and Conner will include many exemplars in their book, and mention one of the best of these in this interview: the CIA. Bingham notes:

One of the case studies in the book is about the CIA. You have to figure that if the CIA can get comfortable with it, just about any organization should be able to embrace it. But there are most certainly corporate climates that are not comfortable with it. Underneath, there is a torrent of people coming into companies and organizations, and this is a way in which they are totally comfortable in learning and collaborating.

And Conner later adds:

The CIA example in the book is one organization that wanted to share. They wanted to be an exemplar. They wanted to show that it could be done there with the level of security and discretion they require. They focused on helping their people make smart choices, as opposed to limiting the technology. A lot of organizations we have talked to recognize that this is going on in their organizations. They can choose to ignore it or they can choose to support it, but they can’t really choose to turn it off. It can’t be stopped in its tracks. The organizations that will go the furthest the fastest are those that recognize what is going on and take advantage of it. They will illuminate it and help people learn from one another. It is not a conversation of "if," it is a conversation of "how" and "how well."

Indeed, Sean Dennehy of the CIA gave a presentation at ASTD ICE 2010 on the internal use of numerous social media tools at the CIA. This started as an internal wiki called "Intellipedia" but has since grown to include additional Web 2.0 technologies for a range of benefits, such as video sharing, micro-blogging, social bookmarking, internal social networking profiles, and more. This and many other examples are what you have to look forward to from The New Social Learning.

Interested in how an LMS can better enable informal learning in your organization through the use of Web 2.0 technologies? Contact your Element K Account Executive or Learning Consultant to learn more about how the collaboration features of Element K's award-winning learning management system, KnowledgeHub, can support social learning in your organization.

Conference: Fall 2010 CLO Symposium

September 27-29, 2010, Dana Point, California

The theme for the symposium is "Unleashing Learning: From Strategy to Execution." From the conference website: "Gone are the days when strategy was solely the responsibility of academics and business thinkers sequestered away in an ivory tower. Today's organizations need a flexible, dynamic strategy carried out by a nimble workforce that is actively engaged in developing and executing on shared goals and objectives. Learning is no longer something to be delivered to employees in response to a strategic shift; it's now a natural outgrowth of engaged employees collaborating to carry out a shared vision. In this world, organizational strategy and learning strategy are integrally linked together to meet challenges and capitalize on opportunities. Join us at the Fall 2010 Chief Learning Officer Magazine Symposium as we examine the links between learning and strategy and explore how learning and workforce development are critical to top-notch execution."

For more information about this conference, see the CLO Media website.

Special Announcement! Enhancements to Business Simulations

Robust business simulation exercises have long been a centerpiece of Element -authored soft-skills courses. These simulations are included in e-Learning courses ranging from our catalog business skills and IT soft-skills courses, to many of our custom-developed courses for clients. Robust scenarios coupled with relevant decision points mean the simulations provide a safe and effective environment to further your understanding of key concepts and practice applying the critical guidelines from the course.

But even when an Element K product or service is working well, our content and solutions teams want to further improve it -- and our customers always have great ideas for enhancements as well! Our mission earlier this year was to improve upon our current business simulation design to deliver a more engaging experience to learners. And I think you'll agree that the set of enhancements listed below amounts to a significant upgrade on an already strong product:

  • Enhanced overall layout with updated graphics -- A more engaging visual design and one that is more consistent with the overall course design improvement made in the fall of 2009.

  • Created a significantly larger media area -- The media area now supports 16:9 video shoots. The dimension chosen (512 x 288) maps to what Adobe considers 'best', and allows us to retain high quality Flash video while being mindful of some customers' performance requirements.

  • Added flexibility for the primary scenario page -- The initial scenario page can now support either video or Flash SWF animations, and we have more options for media size and display ratio (4:3 or 16:9).

  • Made the Take a Tour feature configurable -- Our instructional designers can now choose to author course-specific simulation tours, or can disable the tour feature altogether.

  • Updated the Get Advice box -- Usability has been enhanced as learners can now move the Get Advice box around the screen when desired.

  • Added new scoring functionality -- The default star-based system was redesigned, and two new scoring mechanisms were added: the optimal path meter and the numeric score. These options can make the simulations more game-like, and users' motivation can increase as they see their score or meter rating increase. Further, our instructional designers can choose one or more of these features as appropriate for the particular course.

  • Made text choices display later -- At a decision point, the choices now appear only after the media has concluded, making it more likely a learner will focus on the complete context and scenario being presented to them. (Learners can optionally move forward in the media, useful for situations where they have already viewed the media clip.)

  • Updated the Summary Page -- The summary page at the end of a simulation has a visual design that matches the design of the rest of the simulation, e.g., with scoring information at the top. Further, summary information is dynamic, meaning it will auto display scoring information and auto adjust the summary text based on what features are enabled in the simulation.

  • Enabled the Text Always On and Closed Captioning features -- Rather than taking up valuable screen real estate with duplicate text, we have now added our standard "Text Always On" and "CC" features to the navigation controls. These enhancements better accommodate 508 compliance requirements while allowing for larger screen space for media components.

  • Added audio sound effects -- To give the simulations a more engaging, game-like feeling, several sound effects now occur upon the following events: when a user rolls over a text choice, when a user clicks a text choice, and when the numeric score changes.

  • Updated the decision history box -- The visual design of the decision history box has been updated to reflect the new, overall look and feel of the simulations.

At Element K, we take pride in our commitment to strong instructional design, and think long and hard about when to use the various tools, techniques, and features available to us (whether in our catalog e-Learning development or in custom-built courses). So it is worth noting that our Solutions Development team took great care in building the above features into the business simulation engine in a very flexible way, such that our instructional designers can make proper judgments regarding when to use each feature.

The first catalog e-Learning course to have these new features available is Feedback That Works. Additional courses will demonstrate some or all of the above features in the coming weeks and months.

Contact your Element K Account Executive or Learning Consultant for more information about the robust business simulation exercises included in many Element K e-Learning courses.
