ASTD Employee Learning Week

The American Society for Training and Development (ASTD) is again celebrating employee learning in organizations with their Employee Learning Week (ELW) program from December 7-11, 2009. As their website indicates, "Employee Learning Week is an awareness campaign highlighting the important connection between learning and achieving organizational results." Learning and training are more important now than ever before, as "the growing skills gap and the increased need to compete in today's economy require organizations to develop a knowledgeable and highly skilled workforce."

All organizations are encouraged to participate, and ASTD provides the following helpful tips and ideas for making your ELW efforts a success:

  • Work with members of your ASTD chapter to pilot a PR campaign targeted to business leaders and learning professionals in your community.
  • Institute an employee development recognition event for individuals and departments in your organization.
  • Introduce new learning opportunities during the week.
  • Work with government officials to pass a proclamation recognizing Employee Learning Week.
  • Communicate learning and development tips to your workforce each day of the week.
  • Host a press briefing with the local media.
  • Host a program with a local university or community college.
  • Help employees create individual development plans to increase and enhance their skills.
  • Submit an article about your company's learning efforts to a local newspaper.

ASTD provides some additional information about a few of these ideas at www.employeelearningweek.org/involve.html.

Note further that your organization can be designated an ASTD "Champion of Learning" by participating in ELW. See what some of your L&D peers did in 2008 and 2007 to showcase their ELW efforts!

The 2009 ASTD State of the Industry Report

The American Society for Training and Development (ASTD) recently announced the release of its 2009 State of the Industry Report, "a comprehensive look at the training and development investments, practices, and trends for 2008." This report provides data from 301 organizations, including members of the ASTD Benchmarking Forum and ASTD BEST Award winners.

The positive headline is that despite economic challenges, businesses invested over $130 billion in 2008 in employee learning and development -- an average of $1,068 per employee. While this spending was reduced slightly in 2008 (down 3.8 percent from the 2007 level of $1,110), "learning professionals took on more responsibility, increasing the number of employees to whom they were responsible and looking for ways to operate efficiently." In fact, the report indicates that the average number of employees per learning staff member was 253 in 2008, up from 227 the previous year, while the average cost per learning hour used decreased 7.1 percent, from $56 in 2007 to $52 in 2008.

In terms of content usage, "employees accessed an average of 36.3 hours of formal learning content, slightly down 2.9% from 2007's 37.4 hours, but still representing a meaningful amount of resources allocated to each employee for workplace learning and performance."

The 2009 State of the Industry Report shows that despite tough economic times, learning professionals adapted and continued to deliver, even increasing the number of formal learning opportunities despite having fewer resources. It also reveals a commitment on the part of business leaders who understand that an ongoing financial and operational commitment is required to leverage human capital to its fullest. To read the full report, ASTD members can go to www.astd.org.

On the Need to Prepare for an Aging Workforce

The Sloan Center on Aging & Work at Boston College has published a report titled "The Pressures of Talent Management," which covers the extent to which organizations are aware, and prepared for, the effects of an aging workforce. They found that overall, "nearly 70% of the almost 700 organizations surveyed do not yet know how old their workers are or what proportion is likely to retire. 40% stated that the aging of the workforce will have a detrimental impact on their organization in the next three years."

Based on specific demographics, some organizations will of course be harder hit than others. But Marcie Pitt-Catsouphes, Director of the Sloan Center on Aging & Work and report co-author, puts the overall issue well when she said: "Knee-jerk reactions to today's challenging economic reality aside, U.S. companies need to start planning strategically for workforce sustainability. The current abundance of older worker talent and experience is going to dry up, and businesses will very soon need to fill hundreds, if not thousands, of jobs."

The report examined "talent management practices at 696 organizations representing the 10 leading sectors of the economy. These types of employers account for 83% of employment and 85% of payrolls in the United States. The companies studied, which range from small enterprises to very large organizations, collectively employed over one million workers." As noted in their press release, some of the key findings include:

  • 77% of employers surveyed had not analyzed projected employee retirement rates or assessed employee career plans.
  • More than half (56%) had not assessed the skills their organizations need today and into the future.
  • About one-third of employers reported not having enough programs for recruitment or training of older workers.

Although recent economic conditions are leading many to stay in the workforce longer, the demographics of the "Baby Boomers" (born between 1946-1964) will eventually hit some industries very hard, "leading some economists to predict labor shortages of 10-15 million in the coming decade." Eventually, this inevitable "brain drain" will impact every organization -- so what are you as a learning and development professional doing to ease these effects?

KnowledgeHub LMS Platform

In an effort to continually improve the reporting capabilities of KnowledgeHub, Element K's full-featured LMS, we have added a new feature called Spot Reporting. In addition to the 13 Standard Reports and robust Advanced Reporting Engine, KnowledgeHub now has Spot Reporting which gives an administrator the ability to instantly create hundreds of "on the spot" reports from web tables throughout the KnowledgeHub administrator site. Key aspects of this new functionality include:

  • Access to over 3200 instant reports.
  • The use of standard search criteria to define each report.
  • An export button creates the Spot Report in CSV format.
  • Any table with the export button becomes a Spot Report.

An administrator can now create reports that show content assignments, class schedules, group assignments, etc. The following are some examples:

  • Report: All the users assigned to a subpool
    Spot Report Workflow = Users > Student > View/Edit – View Subscriptions

  • Report: Subpool expiration dates
    Spot Report Workflow = Orders & Subscriptions > Subscriptions > View/Edit – View Subpool – Assigned Quantity

  • Report: Users with a particular custom field or in a specific group
