The Main Challenges for Learning Professionals

As noted in the March/April 2011 issue of Elearning! magazine, learning professionals face numerous challenges. A recent report from Aberdeen, "Bridging the Gap Between Strategy and Execution," by Mollie Lombardi and Justin Bourke, indicates four main challenges:

  • Supporting learning after formal learning events
  • Linking learning programs to business results
  • Assessing competency/skill levels to determine gaps
  • Keeping learning agile and responsive to business needs

Do these sound familiar for you and your organization?

Fortunately, several Element K products and services are geared towards helping learning professionals overcome these challenges. Our blended learning products help take learning beyond the formal learning event. And our experienced Learning Consultants group works with our customers by providing services that help map learning programs to competency gaps, link learning programs to business results, and recommend the latest learning solutions to help keep learning professionals agile and current.

Contact your Element K Account Executive or Learning Consultant to learn more about Element K's many learning solutions, including our blended learning solutions and our Learning Consultant services.

The Need for Learning Leaders to Define Goals

The February issue of Chief Learning Officer magazine included a special report titled "Form Following Function," by Mike Prokopeak. The article focused on the technology-driven growth of new learning tools, and the need for learning leaders to carefully focus on goals in order to choose the most appropriate form of delivery.

Noting an analogy between the critical need for a CLO to define a program's purpose and the architect -- following Louis Sullivan's dictum that "form ever follows function" -- Prokopeak states that: "In today's world, the form learning delivery takes is increasingly driven by the function it is intended to serve." Although still the primary approach, Prokopeak notes the continued, slow decline in the use of instructor-led training classrooms, with the primary beneficiary being the various forms of e-Learning. He cites survey data from the past three years that clearly indicates the primary drivers for this shift as being time-schedule flexibility (with the self-paced e-Learning format), the ability to reach a large audience with few resources, and the cost savings of e-Learning over the traditional classroom.

Looking forward, Prokopeak notes that in addition to traditional e-Learning, learning organizations appear ready to increase their use of video-based learning, mobile learning, social learning, and enterprise-level collaboration tools. He notes the inconsistent deployment of some technologies, as organizations grapple with how best to integrate and align them -- but that is exactly the overarching point: learning leaders need to carefully determine when, where, and why to use each of the new approaches available in their toolkits.

Prokopeak then notes the role that a traditional tool, an organization's learning management system, has the potential to play: "The learning management system (LMS) could play an important role in solving that problem. Long seen as a tool for tracking compliance, the traditional LMS is evolving away from a formal catalog of courseware to a more robust repository of knowledge and collaboration and a portal to a rich set of informal learning opportunities."

Contact your Element K Account Executive or Learning Consultant to learn more about Element K's broad range of learning solutions, including not only our award-winning libraries of self-paced e-Learning courses, but also our video content, mobile learning delivery services, and the collaboration features in our learning management system, KnowledgeHub.

Training and Development in Canada

The March issue of ASTD's T+D magazine noted the results of a recent online survey by BMO Bank of Montreal and concludes that "Canadians are expecting their companies to invest more in training and hiring in 2011." The survey included responses from 1,506 working Canadians, with 33 percent indicating that they thought their employers will invest in training in 2011, slightly higher than the 29 percent who expect to see new equipment purchases.

The article notes that with a economic recovery perhaps starting to take hold in Canada (growth projected at 2.7 percent in 2011), the demand for labor will also increase. As Lynn Rodger, senior vice president, talent strategies and executive resourcing at BMO Financial Group puts it: "Employees are the very foundation of a successful business and can be a source of competitive advantage. How a company attracts, develops, and retains individuals executing the business strategy should be a top priority for leaders." This thinking is in line with the survey results, as the highest expectations for training investment were seen in the prairie provinces of Manitoba and Saskatchewan, which also have the lowest unemployment rates at 5.1 and 5.5 percent, respectively.

So what are your employees expecting from your training and development spending and programs in 2011? How prepared are you to support their professional development and learning needs?

Did You Know?

Did you know that 9 out of 10 learning professionals surveyed state that Element K is "better overall" compared to our competition? Element K recently commissioned a survey interviewing e-Learning decision-makers at more than 20 Fortune 500 companies. Each organization participating in the survey recently switched to Element K from their previous learning provider. The survey indicated that 94 percent of responders feel that Element K is superior overall compared to competitors. Three main factors statistically defined satisfaction in this survey: overall quality of content, flexibility in customizing content, and customer service and support. Additional drivers were based largely on attention to client organization needs – these included value for the money, commitment to the client business success, and taking a consultative approach.
